Organizational performance has changed significantly over the past 20 years, and it isn’t getting easier, particularly for Owners, CEO's and Presidents (OCP's), who are the ultimate decision-makers for their organizations:
✔ Technology has impacted communications tremendously: phone, email, text, face-to-face, and social require unique skills.
✔ There are as many as five generations in the workplace at the same time, with different approaches to work.
✔ Customer service expectations have increased requiring higher quality and consistency delivered quickly.
✔ Employees have higher expectations of their employers, if you don’t engage them quickly and often they’ll leave.
✔ Your performance is impacted not only by the primary product or service but by the myriad of suppliers you utilize.
✔ Technical competence is necessary across many disciplines beyond just your core competencies.
This makes the job of OCP's far more challenging. The number of decisions to be made, their complexity, and the pace necessary to remain competitive are putting real strains on the leaders at the top of every organization. How would your life change if your leadership team and all of your employees were helping to guide your organization through the challenges identified above? How nice would it be if they understood the key business drivers for your company, were able to keep pace with the technical aspects of their role, and utilized their unique perspective to not only solve problems but create opportunities that would leapfrog the competition?
The school of hard knocks will always be the default, and many of us have developed our skills through learning by doing. But this is a slow, erratic and potentially faulty process. Your functional leaders need to be really good at their technical roles but also need to be strong in leading teams, in encouraging collaboration, in developing team members, and in having a solid understanding of your operations.
I am passionate about seeing Michigan organizations improve their leadership skills. It will not only improve our organization and economic performance, but will extend throughout our communities, our schools, and our local governments. If you connect with me on LinkedIn, I provide a daily perspective on leadership and organizational challenges that you might find useful. I will NOT contact you with a solicitation as soon as you connect. My interest is in finding OCP's that have a genuine desire to improve their performance and are interested in discussing the possibilities further.
